Conecta was created when it was discovered that some state and local governments needed to accelerate their digital inclusion projects covering public education networks. Oi and Telemar anticipated this process, initially providing free internet connections to around 2,000 schools which already had computers and which were covered by Velox, a high speed internet product. More than two million students have already benefited from the Telemar Digital Community Program, now simply called Conecta.
The project was designed drawing on the experience of Oi Futuro in developing Tonomundo, which was launched in 2000 as the Telemar Education Project, and until the present date has benefited more than 515,000 students and 7,276 teachers in 437 public schools. Tonomundo, developed in partnership with the School of the Future from the University of São Paulo (USP), was initially set up in a pilot project covering 67 locations in 16 different states. Since 2004 the project has been adopted as public policy in Pernambuco and Fortaleza, and the methodology has been transferred to public municipal and state schools.
Launched in July 2004, Conecta is currently being implemented by the state governments of Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas and Espírito Santo and the city governments of Natal, Recife, João Pessoa and Maceió. Oi and Telemar have formed partnerships with state and municipal governments in 14 states to implement this program. The Ministry of Communications also participates, thereby unifying efforts to accelerate the digital development of the country.
In addition to internet access, Conecta also allows the creation of inter-school networks using an internet portal. Conecta is a virtual learning community designed for teachers and students of the public school network. Our aim is to create together a space for the exchange of ideas, as well as to discuss subjects that can lead to significant learning.
