What is that time we call future? Has it an exact date or hour? Where is it? Somewhere far away?
We are Oi Futuro, Oi’s innovation and creativity Institute. We don’t have all the answers, but as we were born with the future in our name, we believe we can appropriate it, gathering and connecting people to transform realities.
And it is in the strength of transformation which comes from the collective that remains our biggest motivation. We are all a bit futurists and optimists. So we want to build this innovation space on a daily basis: in the social relations, occupying our cities, in the way we express ourselves, sometimes so differently.
We believe future is a set of decisions we make now: education, culture, art, technology, entrepreneurship, social innovation. And it doesn’t matter which day, month or year is now. The plurality in looking towards the multiple possible futures make each today a tomorrow of which we hadn’t thought yet.
We advocate an education that proposes radical changes. It’s less about teaching and much more about learning. Stimulating youth protagonism and experiencing innovation in practice, going beyond the shared physical spaces and occupying the territory as a challenge. We believe youth, inspired by a new mentality, is capable of proposing a more sustainable and generous future. We are making room for them.
We work for smarter cities. Places where creativity originally draws the daily relations, with benefits. Innovation in products, services and processes that go much beyond technological discoveries. The cities of the future are the ones that we know, each time they absorb new governance policies, collaborative solutions and social engagement. They are our own cities, reoccupied to widen the perception of the urban perimeter and establish new effective paths for its inhabitants. We are inspiring the construction of these paths.
We support art because it improves the society we live in. Inspires empathy, understanding and cooperation. Rises critical thinking and curiosity towards the world. Bring people closer and open hearts and minds to human diversity. With technology, art has become an endless experimentation and research field, overcoming the borders of creation, gathering those who produce and who consume in a new construction of experience. We are blowing the boundaries of language and cultural fruition.
We value innovation carried out by ordinary people, that is born from collaboration and aims to network dissemination so that it can benefit many more people. We want accessibility as a practice of coexistence, and not as a rule. We stimulate the expansion of the repertoire and understand technology to serve the logic of abundance.
We believe in innovation. And we are co-creating this space with our society, side by side, every single day.
We don’t know all the answers, but, as they say and we agree: the future is now.

Oi Futuro was born with the mission of democratizing access to knowledge in order to accelerate and promote human development, with educational, cultural, sustainability and sports projects throughout Brazil.
The Institute has been building its history based on remarkable facts and milestones. The timeline below portrays all the path from Oi Futuro’s foundation to its consolidation as the innovation and creativity Institute of Oi, one of Brazil’s largest telecommunications providers. Check it out:
One of the first Brazilian telephone central offices is launched in the building of our nowadays Cultural Center, at Dois de Dezembro Street, in Flamengo neighborhood. Until the 30’s, telephone calls were established manually, always transferred by switchboard operators. Historically, the profession was an important way of starting female labor force participation in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian capital back then.
The Telephone Museum is launched in the historical Telephone District of Belo Horizonte, at Afonso Pena Avenue, displaying a collection of 200 items, including old and new equipments, as well as historical and audiovisual documents.
The Telephone Museum is launched in the building that hosts our nowadays Culture Center.
The building that hosts the Telephone Museum gets a contemporary art gallery and features video, music and performing arts activities.
The museum is resized to preserve the telecommunications heritage and to display the endless possibilities of technology to the future
Telemar Education Project (PTE) and The Future School from the University of São Paulo sign a partnership agreement to offer remote continuing education to teachers and students and to share educational experiences among schools from XX Brazilian states.
Oi Futuro (back then Telemar Institute) is born in December with the mission of carrying out, supporting and recognizing educational and cultural initiatives that contribute to human development.
The pilot test of Oi Kabum!, our art and technology school for youths from low-income urban neighborhoods, is launched in Rio.
Another branch of Oi Kabum!, our art and technology school for youths from low-income urban neighborhoods, is launched in Pelourinho, the historical district of Salvador.
Telemar Institute launches Oi’s Cultural Sponsorship Incentive Program, which promotes and encourages access and production of culture in Brazil by selecting projects through open calls.
Oi Novos Brasis, a program to sponsor social-environmental and community-based projects from all over Brazil through open calls, is launched.
The Institute starts to support projects from The Childhood and Adolescence Fund (FIA), through a partnership with federal, state and municipal Councils for the Defense of the Rights of Children and Adolescents.
In November, the then Telemar Institute launches the Oi Conecta Portal aiming at students and teachers from middle and high schools and also at coordinators, school principals and Education State Department’s managers.
On May 11th, the city of Rio de Janeiro meets a new space: Oi Futuro Cultural Center, located in the same address as the old Telephone Museum, a place of historical, architectural, cultural and social relevance to the city. With an innovative program that values the convergence of contemporary art and technology, the features a wide range of free exhibitions and events.
The Geração Oi education project is launched at Cicero Dias Experimental School, a partnership between Oi Futuro and Pernambuco State Education Department, to assist 200 teenagers.
In April, one more branch of Oi Kabum!, our art and technology school for youths from low-income urban neighborhoods, is launched, this time in Recife.
In March, as a subsequent step of the Geração Oi program, it is launched the first Advanced Educational Center (NAVE) in the Cicero Dias Technical School, from a partnership between Oi Futuro and Pernambuco State Education Department.
Oi is the first telecommunications provider to support social sports projects through the Brazilian Federal Law for Sports Incentives.
The Telecommunications Museum is launched in January in Rio de Janeiro as a subsequent step of the Telephone Museum and in the same building that today hosts Oi Futuro Cultural Center. The following month, another Telecommunications Museum is launched in Belo Horizonte. A trailblazer when it comes to the interactivity among Brazil’s museums, the Telecommunications Museum explores the most advanced technological resources to tell the story of the human communication, in Brazil and in the whole world.
In May, Oi’s central office building in Tijuca neighborhood starts to host Nave Rio/José Leite Lopes State School, a result of a partnership between Oi Futuro and Rio de Janeiro State Education Department.
Educopedia, a collaborative platform of digital classes developed by Oi Futuro in partnership with the Municipal Department of Culture of Rio de Janeiro, is launched.
In October, the fourth branch of Oi Kabum!, Oi Futuro’s art and technology school for youths from low-income urban neighborhoods, is launched in Belo Horizonte.
In September, one more Oi Futuro Cultural Center, is opened, this time in Ipanema neighborhood, also in the city of Rio de Janeiro, with visual arts exhibitions, concerts, musical and theater presentations. The building’s façade starts to exhibits artistic interventions and projections as well.

In June, the Institute reopens the iconic Oi Futuro Klauss Vianna Theater, in Belo Horizonte, after a period of refurbishment and expansion works.
Oi Futuro’s Environmental Program is launched. By selecting projects through open calls, the Institute strengthens its commitment to sustainability.
Two initiatives are deployed in the Telecommunications Museum: the Technical Reserve, according to international cutting-edge techniques of packaging and conservation of documents and museum objects; and the Mediatheque, making available all the museum’s art and technology historical archive in digital format.
Oi Futuro decides to merge its Environmental Program and the previously existing Oi Novos Brasis, which already supported initiatives that appreciate biodiversity and environmental issues.
As part of the Art and Technology Collection, it is launched a documental book on the Telephone Museum restoration and adaptation.
Nave Rio is recognized by Microsoft as one of the most innovative schools worldwide and as the only Brazilian school to take part in the “Microsoft’s Innovative School World Tour” Program
Oi Futuro Telecommunications Museum is one of the 6 finalists in the “International Award” category. The Museums + Heritage Awards for Excellence Prize is the most prestigious acknowledgments of the United Kingdom museums sector, besides being one of Europe’s most important prizes.
In 2014, Oi Futuro is awarded with 12 prizes, achieving a total of 80 acknowledgments.
In 2015, the book collection Art and Technology reaches its 100th volume and was awarded with Aberje’s local and national prizes, in the Special Publication category.
The Institute launches the Accessibility Book, that summarizes some answers to accessibility issues regarding cultural centers. The book shares thoughts and ideas on a essential subject: the real and the fullest possible access to contemporary art, to a high standard education and to information. This content is available as a printed material or either in audio description or in videos with Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS).
In July we launch Labora, our Social Innovation Lab, a connective, learning and creative hub for social entrepreneurs committed to an impactful change. In September, we also release LabSonica, our music and sound experimentation lab, conceived to encourage creativity and innovation in the music and sound fields, as it stimulates the execution of sound projects and independent productions.
In April we open the Oi Futuro Lab, a creative, experimental and collaborative space thought to boost creators from a multitude of backgrounds and social startups from all over Brazil, selected through open calls. The 500-square-meter lab hosts Labora and LabSonica, offering all the necessary technical support and facilities to its members so that they can carry out their projects in an environment that fosters innovation, collaborative production and networking.
